March 13th & 14th, 2009
at the Minnesota State University Ballroom in Moorhead, MN

Gary Shoemake: The Golden Plus Weekend Square Dance Caller

Gary Shoemake was born and raised in Oklahoma, lived many years in Texas and now makes his home in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Gary started calling square dances in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1964 and was able to make it his full time vocation in 1968. His travels have taken him to all 50 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden, Germany and Denmark. Gary still travels the nation doing special dances, festivals, weekends and teaching caller seminars.

Although they still make their permanent home in Tennessee, in October of 2003 Gary moved to Mesa, Arizona for the winter months and started working a winter program of square dancing in Mesa & Apache Junction, Arizona. He is calling at several R/V Resorts using a full program from beginners through A-2.

After many years of being co-owner of Chaparral Records with Ken Bower, Jerry Haag and Marshall Flippo they decided to sell the label to Palomino Records. Although these callers still do several Chaparral Weekends around the nation, Gary now records freelance for several companies including Chaparral, Rhythm, ESP, Blue Star, and Crown.

Square dancing has provided much happiness and great memories to Gary's life, but he is most proud of the friends and associates he has met through the years.
